Pietro Leo



Pietro Leo is an information technology solution maker and IT Architect Thought Leader that enjoyed working for 25 years in the data science, artificial intelligence, and analytics fields.

He is currently working for IBM Italy as Executive Architect and CTO for Big Data and Cognitive Computing, acting as Chief Scientist, and Research Strategist. He is also the Head of IBM Italy Center of Advanced Studies.

Mr. Leo is a member of the global IBM Academy of Technology (AoT) leadership team. AoT includes all IBM top technical leaders from around the world. From 2012 to 2015 he was also the IBM AoT Worldwide Technology Program leader under the direct functional direction of the IBM Academy of Technology President and driving a team of 30 IBM global technical senior leaders including IBM Fellows as well as IBM Distinguished Engineers.

He is a recognized Workdwide IBM technical leader and influencer in the Cognitive, Artificial Intelligence and Analytics area, having served several customers in multiple industrial domains including Public sector, Healthcare, Life Sciences, Banking, Oil & Gas, Insurance, Telco, Travel & Transportation, Agro-Industry, Media & Entertainment.

Mr. Leo accumulated an extensive practical experience in working both with advanced artificial intelligence & analytics technologies as well as in transferring or “translating” those technologies in business practice, engaging and delivery projects on Cognitive Computing and Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Social Media Analytics, Knowledge Management, Knowledge and Data Integration, Very Large Mining and Search Engines, Semantic Search, Bioinformatics in several business areas. He was in charge to lead a number of complex (multi-millions) and mission critical projects for IBM top clients. Innovation is part of his DNA: Mr. Leo contributed to define the go-to-market strategy and introduced several innovative artificial intelligence and analytics technologies for IBM Italy during the last 22 years.

He regularly provides advisory to the IBM senior executive board members as well as C-Suite clients. He served as scientific coordinator in a number of relevant (multimillions) applied big data analytics & machine learning & cognitive research initiatives funded by the European Union as well as by the Italian Government in innovative areas coordinating the activities of a large number of academic research teams. He is currently a member of the Stakeholder Forum of the EU Bonseyes an AI funded project.

He is National Expert and IBM representative in the ISO/JTC/SC42 standardization committee on Artificial Intelligence. Also, he is the head of the Italian delegation to the 2018 ISO/JTC1/SC42 starting conference in Beijing.

In his IBM career, Mr. Leo served as technical leader and data scientist in a number of projects whose overall effort size is over 150 men a year, working both at the national and international levels. Mr. Leo professional and social network is particularly broad, both internally in IBM and externally, involving Partners as well as Clients, at the worldwide level, holding hundreds of relations.

Mr. Leo received more than a dozen of IBM special awards for high technical achievements including an IBM Client-Value Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in 2015, 2012 IBM Academy of Technology President’s Award, the mention into the IBM Corporate Technical Award Book 2010 and 2013 editions which includes all top technical performers and scientists of IBM at worldwide level. In 2006 he received the IBM IT Architect Worldwide Technical Leadership Excellence Award that recognized the top 12 IBM World Wide IT Architects for that year. He has been included into the IBM One Hundred percent club for 2017. Innovation and Startup hunter, he enjoys to look for innovative ideas tech and not tech around the globe and brilliant minds.

He has regularly been involved in startup camps boards (also as a judge and business mentor)  as well as Hackthons (HackAging 2017) as keynote speaker (EVALITA Watson Challenge, StartupItalia, ItaliaCamp, IBM SmartCamp, CeglieFoodCamp).

Distinguished IT Architect from Open Group, the top IT Architect industry-independent certification board, and a member of the IBM Executive Architect certification board at the European level. Member of the IBM worldwide pro bono services initiative IBM Corporate Service Corps (IBM CSC) that aimed to analyse strategic business opportunities in growth and emerging markets in South America, Africa, East Europe and Far East. Member of the first inaugural team. Keynote speaker in tens of Industrial and Scientific Conferences as well as lectures for Artificial Intelligence university courses in Italy (Polytechnic of of Milan, University of Bari, University of Trento, University of Venezia) and Europe (EPFL Lausanne). He has been a member of Scientific Committees of Scientific and Technical Conferences at national and international level. Author or co-author of about 70 scientific/technical publications as well as co-author of two IBM books edited by IBM Redbooks. He contributed in a dozen of strategic worldwide studies targeting IBM senior management.
